Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Spine with Atiq Durrani

Atiq Durrani, a renowned spinal expert in the Cincinnati area, has been practicing and pioneering new techniques for years. Recently he opened a new state-of-the-art treatment center, the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute (MISI), specializing in implementing Atiq Durrani’s cutting edge techniques. Here he shares some very simple advice on how to maintain good spine health.

Standing:
When standing for long periods of time, the lower back especially comes under a lot of stress. If you are forced to stand for a prolonged period of time, try keeping one foot slightly in front of the other with the knees slightly bent. Assuming this position eases the pressure on your lower back and helps avoid pain. Try to avoid standing bent forward at the waist for a prolonged period of time, advises Atiq Durrani; the muscles of the lower back become de-conditioned in this position, leading to pain.

Lifting:
Lifting is quite possibly the most problematic area for the back, with many injuries occurring or being exacerbated by poor lift technique. Although most people have learned proper lift technique, they still fail to employ it consistently, resulting in unnecessary injury, says Atiq Durrani. As a result it must be stated again and again: bend at the knees, not at the waist. Lift in a fluid motion using the leg muscles. Do not attempt to lift items too heavy for you. Never twist your back while lifting. Use the same technique in picking something up as in putting it down. Always lift with care and caution.

Sitting:
Atiq Durrani recommends maintaining a good and comfortable posture while sitting, with the knees bent and slightly higher than the hips, back straight and head up. Avoid slouching or leaning. Try to maintain your back’s natural curvature.

Healthy Diet and Exercise:
Maintaining proper weight is an important part of back health, says Atiq Durrani. A good diet and regular exercise go a long way toward minimizing the potential for back injuries due to obesity or poor posture. Atiq Durrani recommends consulting your doctor before beginning a new exercise regimen.

Many of these tips may seem like things you have heard before, but the fact is that spinal experts like Atiq Durrani see people every day who have not followed these tips, and are suffering back problems because of it. It is precisely because they seem so obvious that all the more care must be taken not to let them slip your mind, says Atiq Durrani. Mindfulness goes a long way toward overall health.
