Dr. Trevicia Williams Comments on Disconnectedness of Parents and Teens Illustrated byNew Data from The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

DALLAS, Texas (June 8, 2015) – Dr. Trevicia Williams, a leading media expert on parenting, human behavior and relationships, says that a healthy relationship between parents and teens is the first line of defense in combatting teen pregnancy. Her comments were made on the heels of the release of new polling data from The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

The polling data showed that 68 percent of teens answered that the primary reason they don’t use birth control or protection is because they are afraid that their parents will find out.

“The polling data shows that teens are extremely fearful of their parents’ anger and disappointment, however only four percent of parents answered that they would respond in that manner if they found out their teen was having sex,” said Dr. Williams. “The data indicates a huge disconnect between parents and teens.”

“This is why it’s so critical that parents are open, honest and having meaningful conversations with their teens on an ongoing basis,” Dr. Williams continued. “Teens have to feel comfortable expressing themselves and asking for guidance without fear of a negative consequences.”

A former child bride, Dr. Williams specializes in programs that facilitate nurturing  healthy relationships between mothers and daughters. Her workshop series, “I Love You But I Can’t Stand You Right Now, ™ through her charity Real Beauty Inside Out: Healthy Relationships,” is designed to help mothers and daughters strengthen their bond and develop more effective communications skills. Workshops are offered every month.

“Research shows that 87 percent of teens say that open communication with parents would help them remain abstinent,” said Dr. Williams. “This data reaffirms that parents have the power to ensure that their teens have a bright future unmarred by teen pregnancy and other high risk behaviors if they prioritize their relationships with their children.”
